Kolam Demonstration
[2:00pm Saffron Artists Table]
A Kolam is a sort of painted prayer — a line drawing composed of curved loops, drawn around a grid pattern of dots. Kolams are thought to bestow prosperity to homes. Every morning in southern India, millions of women draw kolams on the ground with white rice powder. Through the day, the drawings get walked on, rained on, or blown around in the wind; new ones are made the next day. Every morning before sunrise, the floor is cleaned with water. Kolam is not as flamboyant as its other Indian contemporary, Rangoli, which is extremely colourful. It can get very intricate and complex and has been the subject of Mathematics PhD dissertations.

Rajamani's live shows are spiritually uniting and melodically soothing, rhythmically energizing, technically breathtaking and historically educating. Rajamani's music crosses many cultural, religious, and musical boundaries. Its spiritual essence allows people from different ethnic backgrounds and belief systems to connect to their own true spiritual identity The sounds and rhythms that flow naturally out of Rajamani are an essence of his own diary of his life thru birth, travel, education and spirituality. The musical styles range from India, Middle East, European Roma, Latin, Africa, to North American folk, and also includes music of the nomads of India. These Indian nomadic tribes stretch all the way from the South of India into the Middle East such as the Dom and into the European Rom (also derogatorily known as Gypsies) tribes. Takurami Design - Suminagashi Demonstration
[12:45pm Saffron Artists Table] Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks. It is believed to be the oldest form of marbling, originating in China over 2,000 years ago and practiced in Japan by Shinto priests as early as the 12th century. Suminagashi, which means literally "ink-floating" involves doing just that. Japanese Sumi-e inks were originally used, dropped carefully to float on a still water surface and then blown across to form delicate swirls, after which the ink was picked up by laying a sheet of white rice paper atop the ink covered water.
